Vin Kaefferkopf: how to define it?
The Kaefferkopf wine is characterized by an Alsatian white wine produced in the commune of Ammerschwihr. The locality belongs to the fifty-one grand crus of the Alsatian vineyard since 2007.
The Kaefferkopf can be translated as 'beetle’s head', referring to the shape of the top of the hill. The vineyard producing Kaefferkopf wine is distinguished by its granite-limestone soil and its 72 hectares of vines.
Exposed to the east, the vineyard is located at an altitude of 230 to 350 meters. It offers a complex range of grape varieties, in the following percentages:
- the Gewurztraminer (at 55%) ;
- the Riesling (30%);
- the Pinot gris (9%) ;
- wines of assembly (6%).
The specificities of Kaefferkopf wine
The great vintages of Kaefferkopf are associated with dry wines thanks to a notable characteristic: their freshness. To appreciate their tasting, it is advisable to let a Kaefferkopf wine age between 3 and 4 years, or to air it well.
The terroir of Kaefferkopf is remarkable for its heavy and deep soil. Rich in clays and silt, the minerality of Kaefferkopf is clearly visible on the palate.
The Riesling Kaefferkopf stands out for its discreet nose and aromas of white flowers. On the palate, it presents a fresh attack and length.
The Pinot gris Kaefferkopf presents notes of white-fleshed fruits. It is characterized on the palate by its freshness and smoothness.
Gewurztraminer is a wine recognized for its creamy, fine and mineral flavor. Tasting it after a few years strengthens its character.
Whatever the grape chosen, 3 common characteristics are associated with Kaefferkopf wine:
- its expressive perfume;
- his balanced mouth;
- its elegant flavor.
